HISTORY OF AN ICONIC BUILDING

The 5 Terres Hotel & Spa is located on the Town Hall square, opposite the Town Hall whose facade is listed as a Historic Monument. The 5 Terres building was built in the 16th century by the master mason David Kellerknecht, under the name of Bürgerstube. This is a communal house where the notables of the city of Barr met. They met there, around the Bürgerstub (stove of the bourgeoisie) to deliberate public affairs of the city. Every year the Provost representing the city of Strasbourg received oaths from the agents of the Community who met there under the sound of a bell in order to fix the price of the wine measurement: the Weinschlag.

After two major fires, the building was rebuilt in 1685. Among the main changes, a bell tower with a small bell melted in Basel by Hans Jakob Roth and Hans Heinrich Weymander is added. It is in 1692 that the new building is finally habitable and usable. The Bürgerstube is sold at auction on 15 July 1793 at the Moerlen and Roesch trading house for 510,000 livres in assignats.

In the 19th century, the building was bought by the Muller family (a Strasbourg brewer’s family) who opened the restaurant À la Patrie, in tribute to the old Communal House. In 2014, hotel owner Jean-Daniel Seltz set himself the challenge of creating a high-end hotel in this building. He then began restoration work, with his construction and renovation company SELTZ Constructions. This will be the largest construction site in all state bodies of the company.

A METICULOUS RESTORATION THAT TRANSCENDS TIME

The inspired, demanding and extremely meticulous restoration reveals the oldest hidden works such as fir beams, half-timbering, columns in Vosges sandstone, brick walls, old tiles. Some compositions too old have been replaced by elements found throughout Alsace. And a little like how a jeweler crimps a precious stone, more contemporary elements have been added to magnify the sobriety of the original building, such as the glass roof that covers the lobby and spreads through the room a beautiful natural light.

A VOLUPTUOUS DECORATION

The natural chromatic decoration, created by Jean-Daniel Seltz, embraces raw materials and their centuries-old realization. The reception and wine bar are very special spaces, where visitors discover the hotel but also wines from Alsace, where they meet and exchange. Golden lights are hanging on the canopy. The meeting between this gigantic natural light well and floating luminaires offers a soft and cozy atmosphere, very special.

Your room

Bright and soft, our 26 rooms and our Suite, distributed over 3 floors, highlight the nature of materials while combining comfort and design. Each room exudes a welcoming atmosphere vibrant to the rhythm of historical reminders and contemporary style.

Sweet & Sensual

Unique in their structure, each room offers a specific lighting and atmosphere to make the stay of travelers unforgettable. Elegant and intimate, all rooms are bathed in an atmosphere with natural chromatic harmonies. Touches of color, declined on seats and velvet bed paths, are discreetly invited to bring a warm and cozy note. Gold leaf lighting fixtures and brass switches make the place a jewel of architecture. Their character and the beauty of the materials used confirm the definition of a hotel that is quite unique in Alsace.

Raw materials

Like the rest of the hotel, the rooms highlight the «unique materials» stimulating touch and smell: light oak, leather, stone, marble, velvet. The original and custom carpentry work makes each room unique. Cosy and soft, they are designed with clean lines and made with light oak, noble and raw material that is found on headboards, tables, doors or luggage doors. Leather from the Haas Tannery, one of the most prestigious tanneries in Europe, is another essential material in 5 Terres that can be found in several elements of the rooms. These noble and natural materials call the patina of time and bring a subtly woody smell, specific to the hotel. Velvet comes to intermingle with these materials and creates sensuality and softness through warm colors. Calacatare marble coffee tables add a touch of design and mineral to this sophisticated universe.

Treatments and massages
Our team of professional practitioners trained in Gemology protocols is at your disposal to guide you and advise you on the treatment or massage most suited to your needs and desires. Body and face are purified, nourished in depth, reenergized, regenerated to do you good for a long time. Book your treatment by dialing 450 or 400.

Laundry / Ironing
A dry cleaning service is available Monday to Friday, except on public holidays. To do so, simply fill in the document available to you in the cupboard, slide it into the lingerie bag and contact the reception before 09.00 (for a return in the evening).

A 5-star breakfast in the Bas-Rhin, as tasty as it is balanced. For you, a selection of fresh, seasonal and local products tasty and healthy, carefully selected from producers in the region.

Perfect match between food and wine, our sommelier highlights winemakers from the region while pre-judging wines created in sustainable agriculture. On sunny days, enjoy our terrace and its view of the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, whose main building is a listed historic monument.

Our wine list highlights a local, precious and subtle selection of organic, natural, biodynamic wines, or simply in sustainable agriculture. You will discover wines whose flavors are both familiar and unexpected . Always harvested with respect for the land, and with production methods dear to this wine terroir. Because good tasting is a fundamental quest, this wine list is also open to wines from other regions by privileging the Organic, Natural or Biodynamic certification.

• We work with a majority of products in bulk or large packaging to limit unnecessary packaging;
• We do not offer any disposable dishes and provide guests with dishes (glass and ceramic cups) for their stay. We strive to provide you with a sustainable diet
• We offer meat-free meals, seasonal and local products and adapt to specific diets;
• The menus of our restaurant offers organic and/ or fair trade products.
• In the rooms, we use home products of the French brand Gemology.
• The packaging of these products is made from cane sugar as an alternative to plastics. Its unique properties are based on an ecological material. They are recyclable, bio-based, biodegradable and compostable.
• Our duvets are made of natural fibers, the maintenance of rooms is carried out with ecological products.
• For disinfection and cleaning, we opted for the Vapodil system: an ecological and efficient steam cleaning system.
